Vintage Soul Debut

Emily Highfield is a young Melbourne designer on a mission. She wants to bring past designer pieces back to life to invigorate our modern wardrobes. She sources high end pieces and often re-fashions them for her new label called ‘Vintage Soul’ and then combines this with a talent for creating entirely original items from scratch. She comes from a background of design due to the influence of working with beloved local designer Yeojin Bae.

She debuted her latest collection of pieces, some from decades ago to just a few season past, in an intimate soiree at Albert Park’s The Beach venue. Racks of items from Sass and Bide, Wayne Cooper and Scanlan and Theodore were available to try on and take home (the best rushed off the shelves before I had a chance) while models showcased Emily’s orignal girly creations.

Emily, looking enviably fresh after telling me she only had an hour of sleep in preparation for the event, hosted a mix of guests including actors Natalie Walker and Ben Kermode (of upcoming Aussie thriller Prey), movie producer and writer Bobby Galinski, model Rhys Uhlich and a small scattering of photographers. It’s not often that a budding designer already has fans but here Emily had her photo taken by two excited young ladies who had stumbled upon her work and left with bags full of Vintage Soul clothing.

Rumour has it that Emily is entering to compete in the second season of Project Runway Australia which is due to begin filming in Melbourne shortly. So fingers crossed we’ll being seeing more of the young designer and stylist and more of Vintage Soul very soon.
