Victorian Bushfires 2009

We are in the midst of our state’s worst natural disaster in history. Over the past weekend 181 people have lost their lives and that number is expected to rise substantially. Over 750 homes have also been lost. Entire towns have literally been destroyed. Certain things have really hit it home; the death of media personality Brian Naylor and his wife, the haze and plumes of smoke in the air all weekend, Healesville Sanctuary evacuating its threatened species, relatives and co-workers having their bags packed and ready to run.

On behalf of the team at StyleMelbourne our hearts go out to those affected (as we all are) by these devastating, unimaginable losses. We’d also like to join in the thanks and praise for our emergency service staff and especially volunteers who are still battling the blazes and trying to put the pieces back together for fellow Victorians. I’ll be giving blood this week with my thoughts towards the many injured who are in our wonderful hospitals. This weekend may see conditions flare up again so please stay vigilant if you are in threatened area. Below are some links and information if you also feel the need to do something further;

The 2009 Bushfire Appeal has been set up through the Red Cross here.

You can book an appointment to donate blood here. It really doesn’t hurt too much at all, it’s quick and you could directly save up to four lives. They will need blood over the coming weeks so register online and they’ll book you in when they need you.

If you are interested in making a huge difference in the future how about volunteering with the CFA?

Wildlife Victoria has also started their own appeal.

Shop at David Jones on this Thursday the 12th February as all profits will go to the cause.

Myer is matching customer donations dollar for dollar (as well as donating children’s clothing), up to $500,000, so remember to throw in your change from that latest stylish purchase at the register.

Hermann’s footwear is donating $10 from every Giallo, Edward Meller or Hermann’s label shoe from this Friday 13th to Friday 20th February to the appeal. So if you need to shop for footwear soon do it in the next week!

Bettina Liano donated 1000 pieces of clothing to the appeal.

Shop at Witchery’s Moorabin and Essenden DFO outlets this Friday the 20th as they are donating all profits.

If your hair is in need of a trim head on down to Rokk Ebony (love them – that’s where I have my ‘do done) this Saturday the 21st as all proceeds will go to the cause.

There are even two fashion events coming up that are now raising money for the cause; the La Dolce Vita parade on the 28th of February and the Vintage Soul Fashion Expose on the 1st of March. Stay tuned for further details here very soon. The Fashion Group International (FGI) in Sydney is also collection clothing, shoes, underwear and other wearable items for the fire survivors – to donate or for further info email
