Sportsgirl Autumn Winter 2009 Collection Preview

The Sportsgirl Autumn/Winter 2009 Preview was held last night at the very funky Studio 3 in Crown Towers.  I can’t say I wasn’t warned to be prepared for one hell of a party; however I was blown away by the sheer extravagance of the event.

We were greeted in style by the all singing/dancing act ‘Dirty Laundry’ who funked it up with awesome music and energetic dance moves prior to the runway show beginning.  After pumping the crowd up sufficiently the lights dimmed and we waited in front row anticipation for the show to begin.

The models were HOT HOT HOT, with hair and make-up styled in a preppy versus grunge fashion with locks poker straight and make up in smoky shades of metallic grey perfectly complimenting their nude, glossy lips.  Finally…winter is (almost) upon us!

The Winter Sportsgirl range has taken inspiration from the streets of New York, with the primary trend being preppy with a sprinkling of sequins and some dirty grunge accents.

Leggings appear to be dominating the winter season yet again, with layering being the way to go when working this trend.  Sportsgirl teamed their large variety of leggings with long tees and chunky belted cardigans for a casual look, and with glam sequinned tanks and killer high heels for that party feel.  Sportsgirl will be stocking leggings in a variety of styles, from bright colours, S&B Rats inspired versions and funky metallic silver.  Love them or hate them, leggings are here to stay, (at least for now).

On we go to the other extreme, with flattering silk/satin pants billowing down the runway teamed with embellished party tops and sky high coloured heels.  Sequined and Metallic tuxedo jackets also featured heavily throughout the show providing that little bit of 80’s nostalgia.  On that note, I’m perfectly happy with the odd 80’s throwback as long as they promise NOT to bring back the scrunchy.

As for the upcoming designer collaboration, Sportsgirl have teamed up with Romance Was Born, a relatively unknown label.  However judging by their previous collections, they are destined for bigger brighter things, and what better a way to get your name out there than to collaborate with one of the biggest women’s chain stores in the country?

Romance Was Born for Sportsgirl is not what I would have expected for a winter collection, but rules are made to be broken – right!?  Featuring bright pinks and purples, ruffles, short frocks and even an uber-glam flamenco style frock, the label with a cult following is bound to gain enormous amounts of attention for this daring collection.

The evening was one of glamour, sneak peaks, glitter falling from the ceiling and champagne a plenty.  Congratulations to Sportsgirl for bringing young fashionistas yet another on trend collection at an affordable price point.  It is also worth mentioning that Sportsgirl really do know how to retain their staff, with each and everyone one of the ‘Sportsgirls’ having a wonderful time whilst gaining a valuable sneak peak as to what will be hitting their stores this season.
