Derby Day 2008 Fashions on the Field

Over 200 entrants competed in the Derby Day heats to be the fashion dish of the day. Myer’s new Fashions on the Field enclosure made light work of the elements – no need to worry about potential sunburn, wind battled hair or a drenching. It apparently echoed the design of Myers own marquee in the Birdcage.

The winning title went to, competition familiar, Sarah Schofield of Fitzroy (and soon to be Paris). The Derby Day champion wore a design of her own creation in traditional black and white with a contemporary twist of acrylic hem and hat. The shift borrow inspiration from 60’s Paco Rabanne, while Sarah borrowed a friends’ bag and added vintage gloves to finish off the ensemble. Nicole Taylor was the first runner up in Autumnal tones while the 3rd place getter, Kim Nguien stuck to Derby Day tradition in a black dress with white embellishment.

Derby Day also see the mens’ fashion finals – Michael Wooldrige won that category in a grey Dom Bagnato suit. The suit was checked and Michael accented in with soft lilac shades in the pocket, on the straw hat band and with a tie. Tan footwear and the traditional cornflower bloom at the lapel made for finishing touches. Justin Boheme won one of the very first Carson Awards – a new category and an encouragement-type honour as picked by Mr. Kressley himself. Carson’s tastes run to the more daring side of fashion and Justin’s footwear featuring galloping horses surely caught his eye.

International guests Reggie Wells (a.k.a Oprah’s makeup artist for those not daytime fanatics unlike myself) and stylist Patricia Field (in a dubious Pucci getup) played judge for the day. Megan Gale wore a custom designed Alex Perry and Jennifer Hawkins was another regular feature in the tent, looking cool in an ivory sunhat and bandage-like (yet chicly so) dress.

Congratulations also to the biggest winners on the day – jockey Claire Lindop as the first woman to win the Derby on Rebel Raider.

Would anyone be able to tell me what dress Jennifer Hawkins was wearing on the 2008 Derby Day, and where I could possibly get my hands on it? It’s stunning!
