Kit Cosmetics Design Award Launch

Kit Cosmetics on Chapel Street invited us into a faraway land (think Enid-Blyton style) to launch their new range of nail polishes and lip glosses and to congratulate the young designer who created the artwork. Erin Morris is in her final year of honours in Graphic Design and won the inaugural Kit Design Award for 2008. The award, for students only, was an opportunity for Erin to create a design a little more feminine than her usually preferred clean lines. The story-book scene she conjured up features a little boy and girl floating away in a cloud of firework like petals and features on the limited edition shades.

Erin says that the constraints of the contest weren’t a problem (only a few colours were allowed to be included) – she had fortuitously completed a project on Kit for her studies the year before which she feels gave her an edge. Her designs wrap around gloss that holds up well on lips in shades called Moon’s Light (plum), Rainbow’s End (raspberry) and Spirited Away (rose). It’s also covering nail colours Enchanted Dream (watermelon), Magic Spell (coral) and my favourite, Pixie Dust (mauve).

In keeping with the childlike theme magician Anthony De Masi kept the guests, including designer Petrova Hammond and even winner Erin’s uni lecturers, entertained with close up illusions. I had several tiny bunnies appear by magic in the palm of my hand at one stage – who even needs a hat to pull them out of? An instant sugar rush and waves of nostalgia were induced by bountiful platters of sherbet bombs (the pink ones are still the best), marshmallows and chupa chups while mini-makeovers of lips and nails were dutifully performed.
