I have been a fan of celebrity hairstylist Kevin Murphy since I first found out that he regularly did Kylie Minogue’s hair, and was responsible for her Tinkerbell look in 2001 film Moulin Rouge. His products garner rave reviews in magazines everywhere, and so when I realized I was going to meet Mr. Murphy in person at the launch of his reformulated, newly packaged luxury hair products at The Prince, I was filled with antsy anticipation! Mr. Murphy had returned from the US and UK to be the hair director for Melbourne spring fashion week. Even though I was a complete outsider to the hair industry, his explanations on the night were singularly lucid and I was left impressed by his extraordinary products, testers of which were paraded about by leggy models in Siren sandals and floral tube dresses. Why impressed, you say?
Well, first off, all his products are paraben free and sulphate free, containing essential oils that act as bio-catalysts to moisturize and strengthen hair. Using German technology, he had created a range of shampoos for different textured hair, with a protein enzyme to stop oxidation of the hair and thus maintain its style for longer.
He had also created a hair spray and roller set. The former was CFC free, weightless, with a wetter formulation for high gloss, and boasts a smaller molecular structure for easy absorption. Best of all, it is odorless! He had really covered all bases for the humble hairspray. In simple speak, this range, complete with the revamped, more feminine packaging, was really really good. Mr Murphy was gracious enough to let me interview him afterward, and shared the following tips;
What do you think are the upcoming hair trends?
Hair with movement, block coloured hair a la Dita Von Teese and no more ‘stripey’ colors (bye bye highlights!)
Best hair tip?
Don’t do too much and don’t change your part but keep it the same. Curl only the ends of your hair, and if you spend more than half an hour on your hairdo, it is probably not worth it!
And what is the one hair implement every girl needs?
A massaging boar bristle brush and Anti.Gravity.
I do not mind admitting it here, I am a slave to Anti. Gravity. I use this wonder product; it is a volumiser and almost an all-in-one, adding control and shine too. So there you have it from the horse’s mouth, great hair tips to spruce up your do!
